OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team (0-2-1, 0-1-0 ECAC West) lost its first conference game of the season after Utica (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC West) posted a 3-1 win on Friday night. Special teams played a role in the contest, as the Lakers were 0-for-9 with the extra skater, while the Pioneers were 1-for-6 and added a short-handed goal.
After a scoreless first period, Olivia Boersen (Jr., Stratford, Ont.) put one on the board ten minutes into the second period to give the Lakers the lead. Less than four minutes later, the Pioneers answered with a power-play goal by Morgan Reed with assists from Mary Fusco and Vanessa Maines. Utica scored again two minutes later on a short-handed goal by Meghan McMahon with assists going to Megan Myers and Courtney May.
Oswego State had opportunities to tie the score in the third period with four power-play chances, including what would have nearly a two-minute, two-skater advantage before a Laker penalty made it 4-on-3. Shortly after the Lakers’ final power play of the game, Utica’s Carmen Johnson added an insurance goal with an assist from Brittany Dellechalie.
Catherine Cote (Jr., Val D’Or, Quebec) made 35 saves in the loss for her first start of the season. Jennifer Hammel made 23 saves.
