HAVERHILL, Mass. – Senior forward Giancarlo Iuorio earned AHA Player of the Week honors, while junior goaltender Carsen Chubak was named Goalie of the Week after helping the Niagara men’s hockey team to a weekend sweep over UConn.
Iuorio registered a six-point weekend, helping extend NU’s unbeaten streak to five games with five scores and an assist.
In the 3-0 victory over the Huskies on Friday, Nov. 2, Iuorio tallied a goal in the opening minute of play and added another two quick goals in the second stanza to give the Purple Eagles for the senior’s first hat-trick of his career. The following day, the team captain continued his scoring streak with two tallies to rack up his total to a team-leading 10 goals on the season. Iuorio also assisted on the first NU goal of the contest.
The Richmond Hill, Ont. native finished the weekend with 10 looks on net and now has 11 points on the season (8-3-11). He is ranked seventh in the nation in goals per game (0.89)
Chubak was solid between the pipes for the Purps, making 60 stops en route to his second straight Goalie of the Week accolade, and third of the season.
The junior registered his second and third shutouts of the season, and of his career after pushing aside 34 shots in the 3-0 win on Friday, Nov. 2, and added another 26 stops in the 5-0 victory the following day.
Chubak is now 4-1-3 on the season, making 254 saves. As of today, the Prince Albert, Sask. native holds the top spot in the nation in save percentage (.962) and shutouts (3). His 1.23 goals-against average ranks him second in the nation, while his winning percentage (.688) places him 18th nationally.
The Purple Eagles hit the ice this weekend against the Army Black Knights in conference play. The first contest is on Friday, Nov. 9, and the series wraps up the following day. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. at Tate Rink.
