Utica Takes Cortland 5-2

UTICA, N.Y. – Megan Myers and Kelsey Dowdall each scored a pair of goals to lead the Utica women’s ice hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Cortland Tuesday night in non-conference action. The Red Dragons dropped to 6-14-1 with the loss, while the Pioneers improved to 13-8-2 with the win.

Senior Chelsey Wright (Medford/Suffolk PAL) and freshman Laura Drew (Andover, MA/Canterbury School) netted Cortland’s goals with senior Maggie Giamo (Orchard Park/RIT) and junior Gina Tomei (Bronx/Sound Shore Warriors) picking up one assist apiece. Freshman goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) registered 28 saves.

Brittany Dellechiaie recorded one goal and one assist for Utica, Meghan McMahon collected three assists, and Carmen Johnson and Meredith Tice each chipped in with one assist. Goalie Marissa Hotaling made 17 saves.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period on three even-strength goals. Myers scored her first at three minutes, 35 seconds, and Dellechiaie made it a 2-0 game just 57 seconds later. Dowdall wrapped up the scoring in the opening period with her first goal of the night at 8:02.

Drew pulled the Red Dragons to within 3-1 at 2:35 of the second period with Tomei and Giamo assisting. Utica answered with scores from Dowdall at 7:07 and Myers at 7:33 to push the lead to 5-1. Wright completed the scoring with an unassisted effort at 12:06 of the period.

Cortland concludes its regular season with a pair of ECAC West games versus Oswego at home on Friday and Saturday.
