The Buffalo Sabres today announced that the proceeds from this year’s 10th annual Sabres Alumni Fall Wine Festival will benefit breast cancer care causes throughout Western New York.
The proceeds will be donated to the ECMC Mammography Bus, the Roswell Park High Risk program in the Breast Center, Hope Chest Buffalo/Niagara, Medina Memorial Hospital and the Janis Foligno Foundation.
“We are very excited to have the proceeds from this year’s Fall Wine Festival benefit these outstanding organizations,” said Rob Ray, Sabres Alumni President. “They are organizations that have a very important impact on our community and we are proud to support them.”
The ECMC Mammography Bus conveys two digital mammography machines to under-served and under-tested women in all areas of Western New York. In addition, the Roswell Park Breast Center will be an expansion of its current program, offering complete diagnostic, screening and imaging capabilities as well as treatment facilities and adjacent research offices.
“The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment and Prevention Program at Roswell Park is important to the community because some women are at a higher risk for developing breast cancer. An empowered woman can take steps to understand, manage and lower her risk, which is important to staying healthy,” said Shicha Kumar, MD, Interim Chief of Breast Surgery and High Risk Breast Program Physician at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Hope Chest Buffalo/Niagara is a non-profit year round wellness program with a Dragon Boat racing league for breast cancer survivors across Western New York. Proceeds will also benefit Medina Memorial Hospital’s mammography clinic, which is located in an underserved area in Orleans County, while the Janis Foligno Foundation supports local charities, organizations and research in the Sudbury, Ontario area committed to the treatment and eradication of cancer.
“The Buffalo Sabres Alumni is a well-loved organization and we are grateful to them for choosing our hospital as a benefactor of the funds raised from the annual Sabres Alumni Fall Wine Festival. This generous donation will be put towards the purchase of a new ultrasound machine, which will allow us to better and more quickly diagnosis breast cancer and keep our patients close to home for their testing,” added Dolores Horvath, RN and CEO of Orleans Community Health at Medina Memorial Hospital.
The festival is scheduled to take place on Thursday, November 21 at First Niagara Center from 6-9:30 p.m. The event, co-sponsored by First Niagara, Labatt, BlueCross BlueShield of WNY, and Fallsview Casino, will feature wineries and restaurants from Buffalo, Niagara on the Lake and beyond.
Participants will have the opportunity to sample some of the finest wines and food that the Western New York and Southern Ontario regions have to offer while socializing with Sabres legends and their wives. The festival will include live music and a silent auction with unique items from the Buffalo Sabres and Sabres Alumni.
