Potsdam Bears fall at Fredonia, 6-4

FREDONIA, N.Y.—Fredonia State (2-3, 2-2 SUNYAC) rallied from 3-2 and 4-3 deficits to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (0-6, 0-5) 6-4 on Saturday night. Senior captain Mike Arnold(Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) scored twice for the Bears and sophomore forward Billy Pascalli (Deer Park, N.Y./New York Bobcats) added a goal and an assist.

Potsdam outshot the Blue Devils 14-12 in the opening stanza, but found themselves down 2-0 at the midway point. Marcus Ortiz got Fredonia on the board at 9:13 and Stephen Castriota struck 1:14later with a shorthanded tally. The Bears answered on the man-advantage just 28 seconds after that with a goal from Pascalli. Sophomore defenseman Max Fogel (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and junior forward Zach Blake (Campbellford, Ontario/Plattsburgh State) assisted on the goal. Potsdam got even at 17:09, as Arnold scored his first of the night with a helper from Pascalli.

Senior forward Adam Place (Scarborough, Ontario/Bowmanville Eagles) gave the Bears their first lead of the contest 41 seconds into the second period. Junior forward Trevor Cope (Swartz Creek, Mich./Atlanta Jr. Knights) and junior defenseman Erick Ware (Huntsville, Ala./Kenai River Brown Bears) assisted on the goal. Castriota knotted the score with his second goal at the12:00 mark. The teams entered the second intermission tied at 3-3 despite a 17-10 advantage in shots for Potsdam.

Arnold made it 4-3 at 7:02 of the third period with assists from freshman forward Tommy Telesca (Selden, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and junior defenseman Dan McCamey (Dayton, Ohio/Minnesota Flying Aces). The lead was short lived as Jared Wynia answered one minute later on the power play to tie the game at 4-4. Wynia notched the eventual game-winner at 14:38. Minutes later the Bears pulled sophomore goalie Jon Hall (Dexter, N.Y./Stouffville Spirit) for an extra attacker. Potsdam couldn’t pull even and Alex Perkins added an empty-netter with 51 seconds left to seal the 6-4 Fredonia victory.

Hall finished with five saves, while Chris Eiserman made 40 stops to earn the win for the Blue Devils. Potsdam outshot Fredonia 44-34 on the night. The Bears were 1-5 on the power play and the Blue Devils went 2-6.

Potsdam returns to Maxcy Ice Arena Friday, Nov. 22, to face the SUNY Canton Kangaroos at 7 p.m.
