The opportunities were certainly there for the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team, but a game encapsulated by stingy goal tending by both teams provided a 0-0 tie in an ECAC West game at SUNY Cortland’s Alumni Arena on November 22.

The Bears (2-4-2 overall, 1-3-2 ECAC West) held a robust 40-24 shots on goal advantage including a 14-3 edge in the opening period, but were unable to get one past Cortland sophomore goal tender Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, N.J. / New Jersey Rockets), who secured 40 saves.

Potsdam threatened to score from a cast of different players from the outset with senior forward Jenn Crawford (Burlington, Ontario / Stony Creek Sabres) leading the way with three shots on goal in the opening stanza.

Others who got a look on goal early in the period were freshmanJordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y. / Rochester Edge), senior captainAmanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario / Clarkson University), sophomore Sally Mooney (New Albany, Ohio / Wyoming Seminary) and senior Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario / Brampton Thunder).

In the later half of the period, another wave of Potsdam shots came from freshman Roberta Beatty (Prince Albert / Saskatchewan), Brittany Lucky (Kanata, Ontario / Ottawa Senators) and sophomore Katie Marksman (Wantagh, N.Y. / Wyoming Seminary).

Still, it was scoreless after the opening 20 minutes of play.

The teams played a lot more evenly in the second period as both the Red Dragons (1-4-2 overall, 0-2-1 ECAC West) and the Bears took 13 shots on goal. Cortland received four power play chances in the period, but failed to convert. The Red Dragons wound up 0-for-6 on power plays.

Potsdam was nearly identical on such opportunities as the Bears were 0-for-5 in such scenarios.

The Bears went on the offensive again in the third period by holding a 12-7 edge on shots on goals.

Each team had just one shot directed on net in the five-minute overtime period. Cortland’s Maggie Corbett (Queensbury, N.Y. / Queensbury) and Potsdam’s Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta / The Edge) were stopped by some niffy saves.

Bears’ goal tender Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario / Bemidji State) closed with 24 saves for her first career shutout with Potsdam.
