-Senior captain Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) and freshmen forwards Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and Amanda Peterson (West Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Flyers) each scored for the Bears as the SUNY Potsdam Women’s hockey team (3-4-2, 2-3-2 ECAC West) defeated SUNY Cortland (1-5-2, 0-3-1) 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore goalie Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario/Bemidji State) made 29 saves for her third career win.
After struggling to solve Red Dragon goalie Deanna Meunier yesterday, Potsdam beat her twice in the opening 7:35 of the contest. Fayerman made it 1-0 with an assist from senior assistant captain Amanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Clarkson University) at the 5:32 mark. After Cortland was whistled for a hooking call a minute later, Ott scored on the power play. Senior forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) and senior captain Brittany Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators) each assisted on the goal. The Bears took the two-goal advantage into first intermission.
The play was tighter in the second period. Potsdam outshot Cortland 12-10 during the middle 20 minutes, but neither goaltender gave up anything and the score didn’t change.
Cortland scored its first goal of the weekend at the 9:03 of the final period. Gina Tomei finally solved Rodrigue to end the Bears’ goalie’s scoreless streak at 129:51. Katie Gili and Niamh O’Connor recorded the assists. After the goal, Potsdam responded with good pressure and finally broke through with just nine seconds left. Peterson scored her first collegiate goal with assists from Fayerman and senior assistant captain Jenn Crawford.
Meunier finished with 38 more saves for 78 on the weekend as the Bears outshot the Red Dragons 41-30 this afternoon. Potsdam was 1-2 on the man advantage and Cortland was 0-3.
Bears Head Coach Jay Green was pleased with the three-point weekend for his team.
“It was a good team win for sure,” said Green. “We’re trying to improve a lot of areas we’d been deficient in and I think we did that this weekend. Everyone played well and it was nice forAmanda Peterson to cap off the win. She’s very hockey smart and deceivingly quick. Alexane played well in goal as well.”
The Bears are now off until Tuesday, Dec. 3 when they host SUNY Canton for the first meeting between the teams as varsity programs.
