BOSTON, Mass. – The William Smith College ice hockey team jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead but fell to the University of Massachusetts Boston 6-2 this afternoon.

First-year Lizzy Weingast scored to give the Herons (0-2-0) a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the opening period. The Beacons were trying to clear the puck when it deflected off of Weingast’s stick into the back of the net. She became the first player in William Smith varsity hockey history to notch a multi-point game when she picked up an assist on Hedi Droste’s third period goal. Weingast sent a pass to the point where Droste fired in a shot that cut into the four goal deficit.

UMass (2-0-0) used five different skaters to score six goals. Kat Armstrong set up Alexa Cappione’s goal to tie the game at one at the 3:30 mark of the second period. Jane Morrisette and Kelsey MacIsaac scored goals 42 seconds apart to put the Beacons up 3-1 at the end of the second period. UMass extended their lead to 5-1 in the first seven minutes of the third period. Sara Alonardo and Michaela Faia picked up the goals for the Beacons. Faia added an empty net goal with 28 seconds left.

Megan Messuri got her first start in net for the Herons making 43 saves. Kailyn Burke started in goal and made 18 saves for UMass.

The Beacons outshot William Smith 49-20.  Both teams were unable to convert on the power play. UMass went 0-for-3 and the Herons finished 0-for-5.

William Smith returns to action Saturday, Nov. 8, when they host Utica at 4 p.m.  The game will be the Herons first game at The Cooler and their first ECAC West match. Prior to the game, at 3:45 p.m., William Smith will hold a ceremonial puck drop in celebration of the team’s inaugural season.
