OSWEGO, N.Y.-Oswego State (4-2, 3-1 ECAC West) scored two first period goals en route to a 3-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (2-3-1, 2-31) on Saturday morning. Three different Lakers scored for Oswego.
Shots were even in the first period, but the Lakers were able to capitalize on two opportunities. At the 14:14 mark, Rachel Lenard finished a pass from Olivia Ellis to put Oswego up for good. Just over a minute and a half later, Brianna Rice struck for her fourth goal of the weekend to make it 2-0. Lizzy Marks assisted on the play. The teams combined to go 0-for-5 on the power play in the period.
The Lakers outshot Potsdam 12-6 in the second period, but junior goaltender Abby Tardelli (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) prevented Oswego from adding to its lead. Both teams continued to struggle on the man advantage, going 0-for-4 in the middle period. The score remained 2-0 after 40 minutes.
Potsdam increased its offensive pressure in the final period with a 12-9 shot advantage, but couldn’t solve Laker goalie Bridget Smith. At 10:56, Alexa Amburu gave Oswego a little more insurance and closed the scoring at 3-0. Erika Truschke and Rice recorded the assists.
Tardelli finished with 28 saves on the afternoon and Smith equaled her to complete her perfect weekend.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, when the travel to top-ranked and defending national champion Plattsburgh for a 7 p.m.contest.
