Potsdam Falls to Castleton in 2015 Opener

POTSDAM, N.Y.-Castleton State (7-4-1) scored six unanswered goal to down the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (4-7-1) 7-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Maxcy Ice Arena. Spartans sophomore forward Lisa Kilroy (Leominster, Mass./Lady Flames) scored twice and junior forward Anna Daniels (Falun, Sweden/Leksands IF) recorded a goal and two assists. Freshman forward Brenna Wilson(Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators) scored for the Bears.

Castleton built momentum off of Potsdam penalty trouble in the first period. The Bears killed off the first three penalties, but Daniels made them pay for the fourth at the 15:08 mark with a four-on-three goal. She picked up her own rebound and skated around the net for a wrap-around tally. The play evened after the opening goal, but the Spartans carried the lead into the intermission.

Wilson tied the score just 45 seconds into the second period, wristing a shot from the right faceoff circle over the shoulder of Castleton senior goalie Paula Stephens (Seattle, Wash./Okanagan Hockey Academy). Senior captain Izzy Fayerman notched the first assist and, in her first game in a Bears jersey, junior transfer Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y./Norwich University) got the second. The Spartans doused Potsdam’s fire 1:01 later. Castleton sophomore defenseman Lisa Buratynski (Ajax, Ontario/Durham) hit senior forward Tori Pizzuto (Waterbury, Conn./Westminster School) with a long pass to the Potsdam blue line. Pizzuto carried the puck into the zone and fired it off the right shoulder of Bears junior goalieAlexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario/Bemidji State) to make it 2-1. Less than five minutes later, Castleton freshman forward Brianna Keats (Calgary, Alberta/Sardis Secondary) deflected a shot from the point past Rodrigue. At 10:41, Kilroy scored on a shot from the slot to make it 4-1. After the goal, Potsdam junior goalie Abby Tardelli (Potsdam, N.Y./North Country Ice Storm) took over between the pipes. With 2:10 remaining in the period, senior defenseman Samantha McNeil (Garland, Texas/Wyoming Seminary) struck to make it a 5-1 contest.

The final 20 minutes saw no penalties and was more closely contested until the midway point. Sophomore forward Ally Brandland (Bellingham, Wash./Cushing) buried a rebound at 11:43to put the Spartans up by five. Just 46 seconds later, Kilroy got her second of the game to close the scoring at 7-1.

In goal, Rodrigue was tagged with the loss after allowing four goals on 30 shots in the opening 30:31. Tardelli allowed three goals and made 14 saves in the final 29:29. Stephens earned her third victory of the season with 17 saves in the opening 40 minutes. Freshman goalie Sky Brown (Lenore, Mass./Birden Collegiate Institute) stopped all eight shots she faced while playing the entire third period.
