POTSDAM, N.Y.- SUNY Potsdam women’s ice hockey team (5-8-1, 3-6-1 ECAC) snaps a two-game skid with a 3-1 win over SUNY Cortland (2-9-1, 1-5-1 ECAC) Friday night at Maxcy Ice Arena. Junior forward Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y./Norwich University) scored her first goal in a Bears’ uniform while senior captain Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) and junior forward Sally Mooney (New Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) each added a goal for Potsdam. Junior forward Maddie Corbett (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury H.S.) scored the lone goal for the Red Dragons.
Cortland opened the scoring at 8:38 when Corbett scored her second goal on the season off helpers from junior forward Laura Drew (Andover ,MA/Canterbury School) and junior forward Corey Temple (Troy, MI/Ohio Flames). The Bears answered less than three minutes later when Greene broke away and shot for the goal. Cortland’s junior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) made the save, but Fayerman followed and scored a short-handed goal to tie the game at one apiece. The Red Dragons and the Bears battled the rest of the period before Greene scored her first goal for the Bears in front of the net at 18:35. Sophomore forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and junior defenseman Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) assisted on the goal. Potsdam took the 2-1 lead into the break.
The second period was full of defensive plays and the stanza ended with the score unchanged. The third period looked to be the same way, but the Bears struck again. At the 14:00 mark, Mooney had a breakaway, insurance goal off a long, lead pass from Ott and junior forward Natasha Allen (Aspen, Colo./Ontario Hockey Academy). Mooney went backhand and it hit off the post, but it came back toward Meunier, who knocked it in while reaching back for it. The goal sealed the 3-1 victory for the Bears.
Junior goalie Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario/Bemidji State) and Meunier each finished with 29 saves. Cortland was 1-6 in power plays, while Potsdam was 1-7.
The Bears look to get the sweep of the Red Dragons on Maxcy Ice tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
