Mayor’s Cup Saturday in Albany

Union College (11-10-2) squares off against its neighbor 15 miles to the southeast in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (9-16-1) at the Capital District Mayor’s Cup this Saturday (Jan. 24) at the Times Union Center in Albany.

MAYOR’S CUP HISTORY

The school have spit two meetings for the trophy handed out by Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan. RPI won last year’s defensive battle, 2-1, as Mike Zalewski scored the game-winning goal with 3:38 left in regulation. In the inaugural game, Matt Wilkins scored a power play goal with 37 seconds left on the clock to lift Union to a 3-2 win. In both games, the winning team has been outshot, managing just 20 shots on goal each time.

Janet has been covering women's hockey for over 35 years. Along with a 38 year career in Public Relations and over 40 years photographing sports, she found a passion in women's hockey. Her initial story was on the founding of the Niagara University D1 program, she expanded to collegiate and youth and was active in the founding and promoting of the WNY Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Federation.
