CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Gwen Paul (Incline Village, NV/San Jose Sharks) scored 45 seconds into the third period and junior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) turned aside 29 shots, including all 16 she faced in the final 20 minutes, as the Cortland women’s ice hockey team defeated Neumann University, 1-0, in ECAC West action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
Senior Abbie Adams (Potsdam/Cornwall Typhoons) and sophomore Makenzie Wright (Burlington, ON/New Jersey Rockets) each assisted on Paul’s goal, her fourth of the season, as the Red Dragons improved to 3-11-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the conference. Junior goalie Justina Mayr (New Westminster, BC/Pacific Steelers) made 39 saves for the Knights (3-13-1, 1-10).
After two scoreless periods in which the teams combined to go 0-for-8 on the power play, Paul netted the game-winner early in the first period on a deflection in front as she redirected Adams slap shot from the right point past Mayr. After killing off a late penalty, Neumann pulled Mayr for an extra skater with 35 seconds remaining, but the Knights could not generate a quality scoring chance and Cortland held on for the victory.
The same two teams meet again on Sunday at 2 p.m.
