BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo State ice hockey team scored late in the first period and never looked back as they picked up a 6-1 ECAC West win over William Smith. First-year forward Andie Plumeri<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5548>notched her first collegiate goal for the Herons.
The Bengals (9-6-2, 6-3-0) scored the game’s first goal at 18:16 of the first period. Buffalo State doubled its lead 90 seconds into the second period when Jeyna Minnick wristed a shot into the back of the net. Christine Harris scored at 17:12 of the second period to give the Bengals a 3-0 lead as the teams headed into the second intermission. Goodwin completed the hat trick and single handedly extended the Bengals lead to 5-0, scoring twice in 21 seconds early in the third period.
Plumeri scored an unassisted goal to get William Smith (2-14-2, 1-10-1) on the board. She fired a shot past Buffalo State’s goalie, Justine Silva, for her first of the season and the first goal of her college career.
Bri Carroll scored the Bengals sixth goal just past the halfway point of the third period. Goodwin collected her game-high fourth point of the game registering an assist on the goal.
Messuri started between the pipes for the Herons and made 32 saves on the contest. Silva played all 60 minutes in net for Buffalo State and stopped 18 of the 19 shots she faced.
The Bengals made the most of their power-play chances and scored on three of their six opportunities. William Smith came up empty on its three power plays.
William Smith returns to The Cooler next weekend, Jan. 30-31, when they host Sacred Heart for a pair of non-conference games. The Herons will play their next three games on home ice.
