GENEVA, N.Y. – The ninth-ranked Oswego State women’s ice hockey team scored four third period goals to pull away from the Herons 6-2 at The Cooler this afternoon. First-year Krista Federow’s two goals were a game-high and her ninth and tenth goals of the year.
The game’s first two goals came in the first 28 seconds of the first period. The Lakers (15-4-1, 11-3-1) won the opening faceoff and immediately broke into the offensive zone. Brianna Rice tipped home an Alexa Aramburu shot just nine seconds into the game.
Nineteen seconds later, William Smith (2-17-1, 1-11-1) tied the game at one. Federow picked up a loose puck and tucked it just past Oswego goalie Tori Trovato’s outstretched pad. Catherine Linehan and Morgan Bayreuther were credited with assists on the goal.
Federow struck again in the second period for the Herons. She netted a power-play goal to give the Herons a 2-1 lead. Dori Craig dropped a pass to Federow right in front of the goal. Federow wristed a shot over Trovato’s glove. Grace Durham also notched a secondary assist on the goal. Federow and Durham have recorded at least one point in each of William Smith’s last three games. Federow now has points in five of her last six games.
Oswego’s Olivia Ellis netted a power-play goal to tie the game 2-2. Ellis collected a pass from Bailee Gooden and buried the shot in the back of the net.
The Lakers got three third period goals in a span of 2:51 that helped them ice the game. Alyssa Brockmann scored at 4:15 of the period on an unassisted blast from the point that found the back of the net. Aramburu collected her second point of the night wristing a shot past William Smith goalie Maggie Salmon. Bridget Hamlin gave Oswego a three goal advantage 16 seconds later. Brennan Butler added an empty net goal with 33 seconds remaining in the game.
Bayreuther had the Heron’s best scoring opportunity of the third period. Federow sent her into the attacking zone with only the goalie to beat. Bayreuther’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced to the boards.
Salmon got the start in net for William Smith, making 41 saves in the contest. Trovato started in goal for Oswego and made 18 saves.
Both teams recorded a power-play goal. The Herons went 1-3 with the extra attacker while the Lakers went 1-5.
William Smith and Oswego will meet again tomorrow afternoon in Oswego, New York at 3 p.m.
