Buffalo State Men’s Hockey Drops Potsdam, 5-3
BUFFALO, NY— Jake Rosen (E. Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) scored twice and Buffalo State (8-11-2/4-6-2) moved into a three-way tie for fifth in the SUNYAC with a 5-2 home victory over Potsdam (8-10-3/4-6-2) tonight at the Ice Arena.
Cory Gurski (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Nick Berst (Depew, NY/Lancaster) added a goal and an assist apiece for the Bengals. Ryan Salkeld (Virginia Beach, VA/Churchland) also scored, while Mike DeLaVergne (Pawling, NY/Pawling) made 29 stops for the victory in goal.
Rosen opened the scoring just over six minutes into the game. Gurski netted his first of the season midway through the opening period, and the Rosen potted his second of the game and fifth of the year just 31 seconds later. Potsdam got on the board just over a minute later, but Berst answered quickly to give the Bengals a 4-1 lead before the close of the first stanza.
Potsdam scored a pair of second-period goals to gain momentum heading into the final 20 minutes, but Salkeld thwarted the comeback when he stole the puck from a Potsdam player in the neutral zone and buried a shorthanded goal 6:22 into the third to regain a two-goal lead. Buffalo State then held on in a penalty-filled final period.
Potsdam finished with a 32-31 edge in shots. The Bengals were 0 for 7 on the power play and the Bears were 0 for 3.
Buffalo State will next host Fredonia in the first half of a home-and-home series next Friday at 7 p.m.
