CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally second-ranked Plattsburgh women’s ice hockey team scored five unanswered goals in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and defeated Cortland, 8-3, in ECAC West action Saturday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons fell to 5-12-2 overall and 4-7-2 in the conference, while the Cardinals improved to 16-2-2 and 12-2.
Senior Abbie Adams (Potsdam/Cornwall Typhoons) recorded a goal and an assist to lead Cortland. Junior Niamh O’Connor (Paramus, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) and sophomore Sydney Carlucci (Baldwinsville/Rochester Edge) each tallied a goal, junior Maggie Corbett (Queensbury/Queensbury H.S.) added two assists and junior Corey Temple (Troy, MI/Ohio Flames) contributed one assist. Junior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) stopped 55 shots.
Senior Shannon Stewart (Pickering, ON/Durham West Lightning) and freshman Olivia Fox (Massillon, OH/Culver Academy) paced Plattsburgh with two goals and one assist apiece. Freshman Melissa Sheeran (Schaghticoke/Millbrook School) registered one goal and two assists, seniors Mia Favretto (Oakville, ON/Oakville Jr. Hornets) and Alyssa Parke (Lynbrook/National Sports Academy) each had one goal and one assist and junior Bridget Balisy (Brampton, ON/Brampton Jr. Thunder) netted a goal. Senior goalie Ally Ross (Red Lion, PA/Gilmour Academy) made 13 saves through two periods, and sophomore goalie Camille Leonard (Oakville, ON/Oakville Jr. Hornets) turned aside all seven shots she faced in the third period.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 after one period on goals from Sheeran, Favretto and Stewart. The Red Dragons battled back to even the game after 40 minutes as Adams, O’Connor and Carlucci each tallied a goal and Meunier denied all 16 shots she faced in the second period. Plattsburgh scored two early goals in the third period to gain a 5-3 advantage and sealed the win with three goals over the final 3:52 for the 8-3 final.
The same two teams meet again Sunday at 3 p.m.
