Kenmore, Williamsville and Lancaster/Iroquois Advance in WNYGVIH

Kenmore, Williamsville, Lancaster/Iroquois have advanced to play in the semi-finals of the WNY Girls Varsity Ice Hockey League Championships. Monsignor Martin had a bye in the first found and are seeded #1 when these teams take the ice on Wednesday (Feb. 11) at Northtown Center in Amherst.

In the first game of the playoffs Kenmore’s Emily King scored at 6:21 of the first period. She got an assist from Anna Orzechowski. AT 9:11 King dropped in her second of the night putting the Devildogs up 2-0 and ending the first period.

Kenmore’s Lina Mirabella scored the only goal in the second period, assisted by Mirabella giving the Kenmore girls a 3-0 lead.

Kenmore’s Olivia Smith started the scoring in the third on an assist from Hannah Gallivan and Nina Stockman. However up 4-0 didn’t deter the West Seneca/Hamburg girls. Jordan Weisenburg scored on an assist from Emma O’Neill and the score narrowed a little. Then Kenmore answered back at 9:33 of the third when Hannah Gallivan got one past the West Seneca/Hamburg goaltender and the score goes 5-2. West Seneca/Hamburg’s O’Neill had the final say as she put one past Lauren Pray on an assist from Weisenburg and Bridget Bork; but not enough time remained and the Devildogs won 5-2.

The scoring began at 13 minutes when Williamsville’s Leah Czerwinski scored, assisted by Sara Scolnick. Then with 24.2 seconds left Scolnick dropped in another and the first period ends 2-0 in favor of Williamsville. Scolnick was assisted by Lexi Skibitsky.

The action in the second was in penalities and the score remained 2-0 Williamsville moving into the third.

The third goal of the evening came on a power play at 4:48 by the Katz Julia Mings, assited by McKenna Rushford. Williamsville answered back at 6:54 when Holly Schmelzer got an unassisted puck past Goalie Madison Aston. The last goal of this game came off the stick of Katz’ Mings, assist by Renee Laur at 8:33 of the third and the period ends 3-2 in favor of Williamsville.

The last game of the “quarterfinals” pitted Frontier/Orchard Park against Lancaster/Iroquois. Scoring was opened at 3:53 with FOP’s Ally Edwards getting one past Maria LoTempio.She received an assit from Gaby Demeo. Lancaster’Iroquois got their first goal from Madelyn Moran, assist by Megan Reukauf at 12:49 of the first and the period ends with a 1-1 tie.

Lancaster/Iroquois put in the only goal in teh seocnd at 3:16. Scored by Renee Doherty and assisted by Reukauf. That period ends 2-1 in favor of Lancaster/Iroquois.

orchardparkscoresAt 4:17 of the third period Lancaster’s Jenelle Piatt puts in the game winner, assisted by Reukauf. Frontier/Orchard Park had one more go at the goalie and scored at 12:15 to bring the game to a 3-2 victory for Lancaster/Iroquois. FOP’s final goal came off the stick of Ally Edwards, assist by Meghan Roche.

Lancaster/Iroquois faces Monsignor Martin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11 and Williamsville faces Kenmore in the second of the doubleheader at 8:30 p.m. All games are at Northtown Center, Amherst.

The League Championship will be played at 5 p.m. Friday, February 13 at Northtown.

Kenmore took the WNYGVIH Section VI Championship and lost in the NYS playoffs to Alexandria Bay/Thousand Islands. In the final match-up of that game Massena took home the NYS Championship.
