PITTSBURGH, PA.-Chatham University (8-13-1, 3-11-1 ECAC West) rallied late and downed the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (8-13-1, 5-10-1) 3-2 in overtime on Friday evening. Sophomore forward Amanda Peterson (West Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Flyers) and senior captain Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) each scored for the Bears.
The first period was tightly contested. Each team managed seven shots in the opening 20 minutes, but Potsdam junior goalie Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario/Bemidji State) and Cougar goalie Megan Buchanan stopped every attempt.
Potsdam finally got the scoring started as Peterson struck on a shot from the slot at 3:10 of the second period. Junior forward Karley Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y./SUNY Canton) and junior assistant captain Sally Mooney (New Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) each assisted on the goal. The lead lasted just over eight minutes, until Katrina Hawkins evened the score with an unassisted marker. The score was knotted at 1-1 after two periods.
Fayerman put the Bears back in front at 10:34 of the third period on assists from sophomore forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and junior assistant captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary). Potsdam held the advantage until the Bears got into penalty trouble late in regulation. At 17:12, Erika Bronk scored a power-play goal to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, both teams gambled for a chance to get the win. At 2:40 of the extra session, Chatham was awarded its sixth power play of the contest. Buchanan was pulled for an extra attacker. Twenty-one seconds later she returned to the net and stopped a shorthanded shot from Fayerman. At 3:36, the Bears pulled Rodrigue with the faceoff in the Chatham zone. The Cougars won the draw and pulled Buchanan again while still on the man-advantage. Jenny Jones then deposited the puck into Potsdam’s empty net for the game-winner at 4:19.
Rodrigue was sharp with 28 saves for the Bears, while Buchanan finished with 30 to earn the victory. The Bears were 0-for-1 on the man advantage and the Cougars were 2-for-6.
The teams battle again tomorrow at 1 p.m. with their playoff hopes on the line.
