BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Three different players scored goals as the Brockport men’s hockey team defeated Cortland, 3-1, Saturday night in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons fell to 9-11-3 overall and 3-9-2 in the conference, while the Golden Eagles improved to 11-10-2 and 5-7-2.
Freshman Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) netted Cortland’s goal. Senior Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) and freshman Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) each collected an assist. Freshman goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) turned aside 37 shots.
Ryan Kangas recorded a goal and an assist for Brockport. Zac Sikich and Jake Taylor each tallied a goal, Troy Polino recorded two assists and Aiden Verbeke and Chase Nieuwendyk contributed one assist apiece. Goalie Aaron Green made 34 saves.
Sikich gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead at 14:19 of the first period. Brockport increased its lead to 3-0 on goals from Kangas at 4:11 and Taylor at 7:39. Nolan put Cortland on the scoreboard at 16:12 of the period. Zappia’s assist on the goal continued his streak of at least one point in every game this season and 25 straight dating back to 2014..
In the third period, the Red Dragons had a five-minute power play but failed to get the puck past Green. Late in the game, Cortland pulled Weigman for an extra skater for more than two minutes but was held off by Brockport for the 3-1 final.
