Buffalo Native Lee Stempniak Traded By Rangers To Jets

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the team has acquired forward Carl Klingberg from the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Lee Stempniak.

Klingberg, 24, has split the 2014-15 season between Winnipeg and the St. John’s IceCaps of the American Hockey League (AHL). He has skated in 51 AHL games this season, registering 15 goals and 15 assists for 30 points, along with 41 penalty minutes. He led St. John’s in shots on goal (152), was tied for first on the team in goals, and ranked fourth in points. Klingberg also appeared in two games with the Jets this season.

The 6-3, 205-pounder has skated in 12 career NHL games with the Thrashers/Jets franchise, registering one goal and four penalty minutes. Klingberg made his NHL debut on Apr. 10, 2011 vs. Pittsburgh, and tallied his first career NHL goal/point on Apr. 11, 2014 at Calgary. He has appeared in 256 career AHL games, registering 64 goals and 69 assists for 133 points, along with a plus-10 rating and 168 penalty minutes.

Internationally, the Gothenburg, Sweden native has represented his country in several tournaments. Klingberg registered four points (three goals, one assist) in six games while helping Team Sweden capture a bronze medal at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Klingberg was originally selected by the Thrashers in the second round, 34th overall, of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Stempniak, 32, registered nine goals and nine assists for 18 points, along with 18 penalty minutes in 53 games with the Rangers this season. He was signed by the Rangers as a free agent on July 19, 2014.
