After a record-setting senior campaign, Keegan Asmundson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) of the Canisius College hockey team will continue his hockey career, signing with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL on Saturday.
The recipient of the Atlantic Hockey Goaltending Trophy and a second-team all-conference selection, Asmundson finished his collegiate tenure with four school records – career marks in goals against average (2.08) and save percentage (.930) and single-season records set this season in goals against average (1.96) and save percentage (.930).
Asmundson was especially strong down the stretch for the Griffs as he helped the team match the program’s top finish in Atlantic Hockey history. After January 9, Asmundson posted an 11-3-1 record and led all goalies in the country with a 1.39 goals against average and .947 save percentage.
Asmundson is the second Griff to sign a professional contract this week after captain Doug Jessey inked with the Indy Fuel.
South Carolina is the ECHL affiliate Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins of the NHL and the Hershey Bears and Providence Bruins of the AHL.
Canisius ended the 2014-15 season with an 18-12-7 record and matched the program’s best Atlantic Hockey finish with a two seed for the conference tournament.
