A stellar performance between the pipes by Stephen Mundinger helped New York defeat Lockport, 5-1.
Lockport was stymied by New York’s netminder Mundinger, who stopped 37 shots during the victory. Mundinger certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 1.65 entering the contest.
New York pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 52 penalty minutes.
New York forced Lockport goalie Sal Stalteri to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots.
New York was helped by Daniel Backstrom, who racked up two goals. Backstrom scored the first of his two goals at 8:36 into the second period to make the score 2-0 New York. Robert Kalata provided the assist. Backstrom’s next tally made the score 4-1 New York with 1:11 left in the third period. Jimmy Warrick assisted on the tally. New York additionally got points from Warrick, who also registered one goal and one assist and Ricky Regala, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Gunther Stange also scored for New York. More assists for New York came via Eric Hewitt, Sam Shaheen, Alex Rojas, and Seth Muzyl, who contributed one each.
Lockport racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and two majors for 50 minutes in penalty time. Lockport had been averaging 37.0 minutes in penalties per game. Lockport could not produce up to its normal offensive output. Lockport averages 4.3 goals per game. Lockport’s offense rang up 38 shots on New York’s net.
Lockport was led by Dylan Jenkins, who scored the team’s only goal. Jenkins scored on the power play 16:58 into the third period to make the score 3-1 New York. Lockport had gained a power play chance when Warrick was whistled for cross checking. Josh Evoy provided the assist.
New York registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Sal Stalteri made 38 saves for Lockport on 43 shots. Lockport registered one goal on six power play opportunities.
