HAMILTON – Juniors Tim Harrison and Jake Kulevich scored for Colgate, but No. 3 Providence proved to be too much as the Friars posted a 7-2 victory Friday in collegiate men’s ice hockey action at Starr Rink.
Jake Walman notched his first career hat trick and added an assist to power the defending national champions. Brian Pinho pitched in a goal and three helpers while Nick Saracino tallied three assists and Ryan Tait finished with two goals.
Harrision notched a goal and an assist for the Raiders. Sophomore Sebastian Weberg drew the secondary assist on both of Colgate’s goals.
Providence took a 1-0 lead just 80 seconds into the contest on a rebound goal from Pinho and never looked back, building a 3-0 lead before the game was 15 minutes old.
Colgate cut into the Friars margin less than a minute into the second when Harrison deflected a point shot past Providence keeper Nick Ellis to make it a 3-1 contest.
Walman restored the Friar’s three-goal margin with a power-play tally less than six minutes after Harrison’s tally. Tait and Erik Foley expanded the Friars advantage to 6-1 with goals early in the third period before Kulevich scored on the power play to bring the Raiders within four.
Walman closed out the scoring with an empty-net marker in less than two minutes to play in the contest.
Ellis made 16 saves in goal for the Friars before being replaced in the third by Hayden Hawkey. Junior Charlie Finn got the start in goal for the Raiders. He turned aside 23 shots before being replaced in the third by sophomore Zac Hamilton.
