OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 3-2 to Castleton University at the Marano Campus Center Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Lakers move 1-1 on the young season. Castleton improves to 1-0.

Going scoreless into the first intermission, the Spartans were able to break the stalemate in the second. Castleton scored 7:40 into the period as Tori Trovato was beaten on a two-on-one situation. The Spartans would then nab another just before the period’s end, tallying one on the power-play with 1:57 on the clock.

Rachel Lenard finally was finally able to get Oswego on the board scoring 9:01 into the final stanza. The play started with a rip from Alex Aramburu at the blue line that was fumbled around in the crease before Lenard safely tucked it home. Castleton wasn’t discouraged though, netting one just 1:27 later. With the clock under two minutes and the Lakers on a power-play, Coach Dillon pulled Trovato for the extra attacker. The move worked as off of an Andrea Noss won face-off, Alli Ullrich shot the puck towards the net. The Spartan goalie made the initial save but was unable to make a second as Aramburu cleaned up the rebound. With 42 seconds left in regulation though, Oswego couldn’t find another one and eventually fell 3-2.

Offensively, the Lakers dominated the game shooting 59 pucks on target. The squad also was in control at the face off dot, winning 43 of the 65 taken.

Women’s ice hockey will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday as it travels to Cortland for its first bit of conference play.
