CORTLAND, N.Y. – Four different players scored a goal as the Cortland men’s ice hockey team defeated nationally seventh-ranked Oswego 4-2 Friday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. The victory over the Lakers is the first for the Red Dragons since the 2005-06 season. Cortland improves to 1-1-1 overall and in the conference and the Oswego falls to 1-1-1.

Sophomores Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) and Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and freshmen Michael Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) and Sean Brown (East Amherst/Northern Cyclones) were the four goal scorers for the Red Dragons. Senior Mike Davie (Brooklyn/NY Apple Core) recorded two assists and senior Adam Diorio (Staten Island/NY Bobcats), sophomore Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) and freshman Shane Bennett (Grand Island/Halton Ravens) tallied an assist each. Sophomore goalie Drew Weigman (Gaithersburg, MD/Northern Cyclones) registered 41 saves.

Junior Matt Galati (Richmond Hill, ON/St. Michael’s Buzzers) and sophomore Mitchell Herlihey (Ottawa, ON/Nepean Raiders) scored a goal each for the Lakers. Juniors Shawn Hulsof (Stouffville, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks), Joey Davies (Demorestville, ON/Alaska) and Kenny Neil (Clarenville, NL/Nepean Raiders) all recorded one assist. Junior goalie Matt Zawadzki (Fort Mill, SC/Nepean Raiders) turned aside 32 shots.

The teams traded goals in the first period. Crowley scored his first collegiate goal for Cortland 6:16 into regulation and Oswego answered when Galati was able to put away a rebound in front of the net. With four seconds remaining in the second period Brown scored his first career goal for the Red Dragons when his shot from behind the net trickled into the back of the goal.

In the third period, Nolan extended the lead to 3-1 for Cortland when he scored off of a deflection. Herlihey brought Oswego back within one but McCormick’s empty netter with 57 seconds remaining helped Cortland seal the victory.
