GENEVA, N.Y.-The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (2-2-1, 0-2-1 ECAC West) led twice, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw with William Smith College (2-2-1, 0-2-1) on Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) scored the first goal of the game to tie Izzy Fayerman ’15 for fourth place on the program’s all-time scoring list with 64 points. Senior forward Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y./Norwich University) also scored for the Bears and senior assistant captain Abby Tardelli (Potsdam, N.Y./North Country Ice Storm) made a season-high 31 saves.
Potsdam and the Herons battled evenly through the first period. The Bears compiled a 9-8 advantage in shots and both teams were unable to covert on their one power play. Ott got Potsdam on the board first with an unassisted tally at 8:27. The lead lasted nearly eight minutes as William Smith’s Kiley Fewster tied the game at 16:19. The score remained knotted at 1-1 after 20 minutes.
The second period was very similar to the first. The shots were dead even at 10 apiece and each team was 0-for-1 on the man advantage. The contest appeared to heading into the final intermission with the score unchanged until the final 18 seconds. At the 19:42 mark, Greene broke loose and beat William Smith goalie Maggie Salmon to give Potsdam its second lead of the game.
Tess Madarasz evened the contest 1:35 into the final period. The play was even over the rest of regulation. The Bears went on their third and final power play with 2:41 remaining, but were unable gain an advantage despite six shots on goal.
The Herons outshot Potsdam 2-1 in the extra session as the contest ended in a tie.
Salmon matched Tardelli with 31 stops. Potsdam was 0-for-3 on the man advantage and William Smith went 0-for-2.
The two teams go at it again tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. in Geneva.
