GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Potsdam in an ECAC West contest at The Cooler this afternoon. Six different players recorded points for the Herons.
Potsdam (2-2-2, 0-2-1) opened the game’s scoring at 8:27 of the first period. Jordan Ott picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and fired a low wrist shot past William Smith goalie, Maggie Salmon.
At 16:19 of the first period, sophomore Kiley Fewster notched her second goal of the season to tie things at one for William Smith (2-2-1, 0-2-1). Rachel McKay created a turnover in the defensive zone, tapped a pass to Emily Burton who fed Fewster a leading pass. Fewster broke into the Bears offensive zone and snapped a shot off from the left faceoff circle. The shot beat Potsdam goalie, Abby Tardelli, rang off the right post and found the back of the net.
With just 18 seconds remaining in the second period, Alison Greene created a turnover in the offensive zone and scored an unassisted goal to give Potsdam a 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
First-year Tess Madarasz notched her first collegiate goal at 1:35 of the third period to tie the game at two. First-yearStephanie Hampton carried the puck in behind the Bears goal and sent Madarasz a centering pass. Madarasz lifted the shot over Tardelli’s pads and into the goal. Sophomore Krista Federow was also credited with an assist on Madarasz’s goal.
In the final five minutes of regulation, both teams had golden scoring opportunities turned aside. William Smith first-yearLindsay Brown deked around a defender and slapped a shot on goal that Tardelli was able to get a glove on at the last second. Potsdam’s Madison Smith had a point blank shot turned aside by Salmon while the Bears were on a power play. Smith was alone in the slot but could not get the puck past Salmon.
In the overtime period, Federow had two point blank shots turned aside by Tardelli. The Bears managed just one shot in the period.
Salmon played 65 minutes in goal for William Smith and stopped 31 of the 33 shots she faced. Tardelli also made 31 saves in 65 minutes for Potsdam.
Both teams came away empty on the power play with the Bears going 0-3 and the Herons 0-2.
William Smith and Potsdam will be back in action at The Cooler tomorrow afternoon. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
