UTICA, NY- The Utica College women’s hockey team remained unbeaten as it skated to a 2-2 tie against visiting Oswego State in ECAC West Conference action Sunday afternoon.
Senior Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) and freshman Lauren Patterson (Burlington, Ontario/Oakville) extended their scoring streaks to six games as they each netted a goal for the Pioneers. Reed opened the scoring at 11:26 of the first period as a long shot from junior Jane Pagano (Erie, PA/Tabor Academy) deflected off the shaft of Reed’s stick and found its way into the back of the net to put UC on top 1-0. Junior Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, MI/Belle Tire) also extended her season-opening point streak as she added an assist on Reed’s team-leading ninth score of the year. Patterson gave Utica a 2-0 cushion just four minutes later as she put in a rebound for her third of the year. Reed and sophomore Samantha Husak (Jackson, MI/Grass Lake) assisted on the play.
The Lakers battled back in the third period and capitalized on UC mistakes to dissolve the two-goal lead. First, sophomore Olivia Ellis took a feed in the slot and roofed a shot into the top left corner of the net to cut the deficit to one. Andrea Noss and Alexa Aramburu picked up helpers on Ellis’s third of the year.
Then, with just over five minutes remaining, it was Aramburu who cleaned up a loose puck in front and netted her second of the year. Ellis and Noss assisted on the play. Despite a number of chances in the overtime period, including a breakaway in the final minute, the Pioneers were unable to get the winner.
Each team was assessed two penalties on the day and both teams went scoreless on one powerplay opportunity. Junior Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) had 31 saves in net for Utica, while her counterpart, Mariah Madrigal also stopped 31 shots.
The Pioneers 5-0-1 (3-0-1 ECAC West) return to action next weekend as they face conference rival, Elmira College. The first game will be on Saturday in Elmira, with the series wrapping up in Utica on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
