HAMILTON, N.Y.- Despite the Syracuse women’s ice hockey team outshooting Colgate 36-17 on Friday night, the Orange lost to the Raiders by a final score of 2-1 in non-conference play at Starr Rink.
Sophomore Megan Quinn pulled Syracuse (6-8-1) within one goal with just over one minute left in the contest, but the Orange was unable to make the late comeback. Colgate (7-2-5) netminder Julia Vandyk registered a game-high 35 saves, leading the Raiders to the 2-1 win.
The Orange dominated possession for majority of the contest, but was unable to produce much offensively against Vandyk in net. For Syracuse, senior goaltender Jenn Gilligan finished with 15 saves in between the pipes.
After a scoreless first frame, Colgate capitalized for the game’s first goal in the second period, as Raiders’ leading goal-scorer Jessie Eldridge found the back of the net. The Raiders took a 1-0 lead into the third period and eventually made it 2-0 after a score from Breanne Wilson-Bennett.
Trailing by two goals late in the third period, the Orange pulled Gilligan in net for an extra attacker. Quinn buried the Orange’s only goal past Vandyk at the 18:41 mark despite a flurry of opportunities in the late moments of the contest.
Throughout the entirety of the contest, there was only one penalty called. Junior Larissa Maryniuk was called for a tripping penalty with only one second left to go in the second period, as the Orange played one down for the opening moments of the third.
Syracuse will have a week off before welcoming No. 7 North Dakota for a pair of home contests next weekend. The first game on Friday, Nov. 27 will be played at 3 p.m. at the War Memorial Arena. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
