MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women’s Ice Hockey team officially took the ice for their first home weekend in program history on Friday night and walked away with a 10-0 shutout over the visiting Daniel Webster Eagles.
The Mustangs picked up their first goal of the game when Megan Kirk (Breezy Point, N.Y.) banged home a rebound from a Kali Rutka (Anchorage, A.K.) slapshot. Rutka was also credited with the assist.
Despite controlling the puck for most of the first period, the Mustangs did not get on the board again until late in the first. With a little over three minutes remaining in the opening period, Rutka ripped a shot from the blue line which proved to be more than the Daniel Webster goalie could handle. The puck went in and out of the glove and fell just past the goal line for Rutka’s fourth goal of the season.
Stephanie Strymecki (Kelowna, British Columbia) extended the lead to 3-0 less than two minutes later. Kelly Graham (Mississauga, Ontario) and Kirk picked up the assists.
Morrisville continued their offensive onslaught in the second period, scoring four more goals. Graham picked up her fifth and sixth goals of the season in the second period, while Bailey Dillabough (Massena, N.Y.) and Kanekaroroks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) also added a goal each.
The Mustangs took a 7-0 lead into the third, but they were not done scoring. Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ontario) picked up her first career goal just 38 seconds into the third period. Morrisville closed out the game with two power play goals, both scored by Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ontario) bringing the final score to 10-0.
Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta) and Taylor Pincheon (Corinth, N.Y.) combined for the shutout in the net for the Mustangs. Both Schmaltz and Pincheon picked up a save in the game.
The Mustangs will have a quick turnaround as they return to the ice tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM to face off again with Daniel Webster in Colonial Hockey Conference action. In honor of the inaugural season for women’s ice hockey, the team will celebrate at center ice with a pre-game ceremonial puck drop. The Mustang captains will be joined by Morrisville State College President Dr. David Rodgers, Faculty Athletic Representative Alan Levinsohn, and Athletic Director Greg Carroll for the ceremony.
