HAMILTON – No. 13 St. Lawrence scored three times in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and defeat Colgate, 6-3, in ECAC Hockey action Saturday at Starr Rink.
Deadlocked after 40 minutes, Drew Smolcynski scored the game-winning goal for the Saints just 1:19 into the final frame. Woody Hudson and Gavin Bayreuther added insurance markers during the last seven minutes of the contest to determine the final margin.
Nolan Gluchowski scored twice in the first period to stake St. Lawrence to a 2-0 lead, but Colgate responded with three power play goals in the second period to make it a contest.
Evan Peterson got the Raiders on the board with this third goal of the season at the 4:04 mark to make it a 2-1 contest, only to see Sean McGovern restore the Saints two-goal lead with his third of the campaign midway through the frame.
Mike Panowyk got Colgate back within one, 3-2, tallying his first goal of the season with 13:59 gone in the middle frame before Mike Borkowski drew the Raiders level at 3-3 with his seventh of the campaign with less than two minutes to play in the second.
Kyle Hayton finished with 33 saves in goal for St. Lawrence. Charlie Finn stopped 25 shots between the pipes for Colgate.

“I thought we had a lot of good efforts tonight, certainly better than we’ve had. The first period was not great, but we found a way to stick around. We had a great second period. I thought our power play looked really good.
“The mistakes we’re making right now are big mistakes. They’re not just little things. We’ve got to shore things up. We’ll continue to work on it, but we need to be better.”
