WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Army hockey team held a lead into the third period, but American International scored in the final minute and won in overtime to defeat the Black Knights by a 3-2 score.
Army (4-8-4, 3-7-4 AHA) got goals from Taylor Maruya and Clint Carlisle in the loss, while netminder Parker Gahagen made 24 saves in net.
The Yellow Jackets (4-13-0, 4-8-0 AHA) were led by Austin Orszulak who tallied three points on a goal and two assists. He helped on the tying goal and the winner in overtime. Trevor Cope scored an extra-attacker goal with 35 seconds left and Marc Dubeau added the gamewinner 3:11 into the extra frame. Alex Murray earned his second win of the weekend with 28 saves including 10 in the second period.
Army took the first lead of the game with 2:16 remaining in the first period on Maruya’s second of the season. Conor Andrle added his 10th helper of the year, while Tyler Pham chipped in with an assists as well.
Orszulak evened the score at 1-1 with 2:08 left in the second period with a power play goal with assists to Shawn McBride and Cope.
The Black Knights regained the advantage with Carlisle netting his fourth of the year with Christian Pomarico adding his sixth helper of the season and Joe Shecter posted his first point of the season with an assist. The goal came with 6:27 left in the game, but the lead was not enough.
Cope tipped home a Bryan Christian shot from the outside with an extra attacker on the ice after the Yellow Jackets pulled the goalie and tied the game at 2-2 with 35 seconds on the clock.
American International took home the win in the extra frame with Dubeau scoring with 2:49 left in overtime to earn the 3-2 win.
The Black Knights have a break until they host Merrimack on Dec. 29.
