PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team started the 2016 year with back-to-back shutouts after defeating Colby 3-0 en route to the 2016 W.B. Mason Winter Classic Championship.

After a combine 27 shots at the end of the first period, neither team was able to find the back of the net.

Freshman defenseman, Ryan Chiasson netted his first collegiate goal for the Cardinals snapping a 0-0 tie 1:16 into the second period.

Pat Egan would pick up where he left off from last night, netting his seventh goal on a 5-3 man advantage to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage.

Plattsburgh State would capitalize again on a 5-3 power play when senior defenseman rang one in and out of the net off the back goal post.

Spencer Finney anchored the Cardinals with a 27 save shutout for his seventh win of the season, while Colby goaltender Emerson Verrier made 36 saves in the losing effort.

Plattsburgh State improves to 10-1-1 on the season. It’s the first time the Cardinals have won their own tournament since 2012 when they defeated Castleton 2-1.

The Cardinals will return to the ice on January 8th when they travel to Norwich to play the Cadets at 7 p.m. The Cardinals and Cadets battled it out earlier this year in the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut when Plattsburgh State won 6-5 in overtime.
