A four-goal first period helped the Buffalo Jr. Sabres notch their second straight win with a 6-1 victory over the Burlington Cougars on Wednesday night at the First Niagara Rink at HARBORCENTER.
The Jr. Sabres got things started just 6:32 into the first period, as Bryce Ferrell chipped it in for his 11th goal of the season. Tim Nicksic got the lone assist.
Pushing hard to get off on a good foot, the Jr. Sabres kept pressuring the Cougars and soon went up 2-0.
Just 2:23 after Ferrell’s goal, Brenden Dunning scored the eventual game-winner with his 14th of the season. Captain Zach Evancho and David Baskerville notched assists.
The offensive rout continued less than two minutes later, as Chris Berger scored his 16th of the season. Nicksic registered his second assist of the night.
A quick 3:01 passed and yet again, the Jr. Sabres found themselves celebrating a goal.
This time, it was Nicholas Bondra scoring his 12th of the season. Evancho and Matt Buchbinder had the helpers.
Things calmed down in the second, as the Cougars tried to rally back with a strong effort but managed just one goal, which came with 38 seconds left on the clock at the hands of Chris Cobham.
In the end, that would be all the offensive power the Cougars would muster.
David Baskerville would add his 19th goal of the season with just over six minutes to play en route to the Jr. Sabres’ 5-1 win.
Tucker Weppner had 22 saves in the win, while Andrew Lee had 20 saves for the Cougars.
Next up for the Jr. Sabres is a trip to St. Michaels on Friday night. They’ll then host the Orangeville Flyers on January 20th at HARBORCENTER.
