Oaks Bluffs, MA — Alexander Taulien ’17 scored with just about six minutes remaining in the third period to cut the Salve Regina University lead to one, but the Seahawks held on down the stretch, scoring an insurance goal with one second left on the clock to secure a 3-1 win over the Elmira College men’s ice hockey team. Elmira’s record drops to 8-6-1 on the year, as the Soaring Eagles suffer their first loss of 2016.
The first period of tonight’s game saw the Seahawks take a 1-0 lead at the 16:34 mark on a goal by Brandon Yee, but the Salve lead could have been much larger had it not been for the efforts of Elmira’s penalty killers, who denied the Seahawks on two power-play opportunities. Elmira would go on a power play of its own, but was unable to find the back of the cage, as the Soaring Eagles entered the first intermission in a 1-0 hole.
Things did not get any easier for the Purple and Gold in the second stanza, as Salve added to its lead at the 12:11 mark on a tally by Peter Gintoli.
Although the Seahawks possessed a two-goal lead, Elmira had its chances in the second. The Soaring Eagle power play hit the ice on two different occasions, but was unable to beat Salve’s rookie netminder Blake Wojtala with the extra skater.
EC was however able to breakthrough in the third period, as the Soaring Eagles staged a late comeback starting with a goal by Taulien that trimmed the Seahawk lead to 2-1 with 6:05 remaining in regulation. Michael Collins ’16 and Jarryd ten Vaanholt ’16 were credited with assists on the Elmira goal.
Elmira looked to even tonight’s game in the final six minutes, but Salve went on to score an insurance goal on an empty net with one tick on the clock, as the Seahawks escaped with a 3-1 victory.
Turning Point
The turning point for Elmira was its inability to find the back of the net with the extra skater, as the Purple and Gold went 0-for-3 on power-play opportunities. The Soaring Eagles entered the night having gone 3-for-9 on power-play chances in their last two games.
