1/22/15: NYI 5 at OTT 2
The Islanders netted three third-period goals to top the Senators in Ottawa 5-2 on Friday night. Four different Islanders, Travis Hamonic (1G, 1A), Kyle Okposo (1G, 1A), Frans Nielsen (2A) and John Tavares (1G, 1A), recorded multi-point games. After missing four games due to injury, Hamonic returned to lead the Islanders in TOI for the 22nd time this season and was named the game’s #2 Star. Jaroslav Halak made 28 saves in the win.

1/17/15: NYI 1 vs. VAN 2 SO
The Islanders fired a season-high 48 shots but could only beat Canucks goalie Ryan Miller once in a 2-1 shootout loss to Vancouver on Sunday at Barclays Center. New York’s lone goal came off the stick of Ryan Strome with just under 50 seconds left in the game to force overtime. In the shootout, Miller stopped all three Islanders (Nielsen, Okposo and Tavares) while Vancouver’s Radim Vrbata connected on his shootout attempt for the game winner. Jaroslav Halak made 25 saves, including five in overtime, to help the Islanders earn a point in their third straight game.

1/14/15: NYI 3 vs. NYR 1
The Islanders erupted for three goals in the final period to top their crosstown rivals, the New York Rangers, for the second time this season Thursday night with a 3-1 win at Barclays Center. The Rangers opened the scoring with 46 second left in the second period, but Brock Nelson drew the Islanders even just 1:53 into the third. Nick Leddy’s power-play tally three minutes later proved to be the game-winner, his first of the season. Jaroslav Halak made 34 saves in the win. Islanders’ rookie, Adam Pelech (2A) tallied his first career NHL points.
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP
The Islanders’ return to Barclay’s Center to take on the Red Wings for the first time this season. Since the 2007-08 season, New York holds an 8-2-0 record against Detroit (2-1-0 last season). New York will look to extend their point streak to five games (3-0-1) in tonight’s contest.

TEAM NOTES

Johnny All-Star: John Tavares will represent the New York Islanders at the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend. It will mark Tavares’ third straight All-Star Game selection. Tavares scored four goals for Team Toews at least year’s event in Columbus, Ohio, tying an NHL All-Star Game record as the sixth player ever to score four. The Oakville, Ontario native currently ranks second Islanders in goals (16) and in points (33).

Brock N’ Roll: Brock Nelson has five points (4G, 1A) in his last four games, including his first career NHL hat trick in Tuesday’s win over the Blue Jackets (Jan. 12). Nelson leads all Islanders with 18 goals this season.

Cal on Me: In the absence of Islanders’ TOI leaders, Johnny Boychuk and Travis Hamonic, d-man Calvin de Haan helped bare the workload for New York. After losing Hamonic to injury, de Haan led New York in TOI in 3-of-4 games (2-1-0). De Haan is averaging 23:04 minutes per night, up from his season average of 20:45. De Haan also leads the team with 113 blocked shots – fifth in the NHL.

Heavy Hitters: Matt Martin leads the NHL in hits with 221. Linemate Cal Clutterbuck is just behind him with 187, tied for third in the league. Martin has led the NHL in this category each of the last four seasons, while Clutterbuck led the league the three season prior to that (2008-09 -2010-11). The Islanders as a team currently lead the NHL in hits with 1,460.

Killin’ It: The Islanders currently boast the second best penalty kill in the league and have killed 72-of-76 penalties over their last 24 games. That stretch included a franchise record 15 straight games without allowing a power-play goal; New York went a perfect 42-for-42.
