ASTON, PA. – The Neumann women’s ice hockey team scored three first-period goals and defeated Cortland, 5-0, in ECAC West action Monday afternoon in the second of two conference games that were moved back two days due to snowstorm Jonas. The Red Dragons had a school-record six-game winning streak snapped, falling to 7-7-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the conference. The Knights improved to 4-12-1 and 2-9-1.
Senior Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) started in goal for Cortland, making nine saves in the first period. Junior goalie Kelly Farinella (Marlton, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) turned aside 21 of the 23 shots she faced over the final two periods for the Red Dragons.
Bek Lucas led Neumann with two goals and one assist, while Jaclyn King, Casey Kilduff and Grace Kleinbach each tallied a goal and Megan Russelo, Jackie Schneider and Jessica Langdon chipped in with one assist apiece. Goalie Justina Mayr registered 40 saves in postinbg the shutout.
Cortland was scheduled to travel to Hamilton for a non-conference game on Tuesday at 7 p.m., but the game has been moved to Monday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
King opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the game. Lucas then netted a pair of goals at 2:25 and 10:03 to give Neumann a 3-0 lead after the first period. Kilduff’s short-handed goal three minutes into the second period extended the Knights’ lead to 4-0. Kleinbach made it a 5-0 game heading into the third period with a goal at 8:33. Cortland outshot Neumann, 17-12, during the third period but could not spoil the shutout.
The Red Dragons return to action this weekend when they host Chatham University on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. in ECAC West action.
