BUFFALO, N.Y.-Buffalo State (9-5-4, 5-3-1 SUNYAC) scored three third period goals en route to a 6-1 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (10-6-3, 6-3-1) on Friday night. Junior forward Tommy Telesca (Selden, N.Y./New York Bobcats) scored for the Bears. Mac Wood and Anthony Beaumont each scored twice for the Bengals.

Tough defense allowed the two teams just six shots on goal apiece in the opening 20 minutes. However, Buffalo State was able to make the most of two chances. Mac Wood put the Bengals up for good at 4:46 with an even strength marker. He then doubled the lead at 17:34 with a power-play goal and Buffalo State took the 2-0 lead into the break.

The middle stanza was more wide open, but only two more goals were scored. Telesca cut the deficit in half at 11:06. Senior forward Billy Pascalli (Deer Park, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and junior forward Vinny Caligiuri (Shoreham, N.Y./Hartford Wolfpack) each assisted on the goal. Any momentum generated from the goal was halted nearly six minutes later as Beaumont struck for his first of the game. The Bengals led 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Potsdam actually outshot Buffalo State 10-9 in the third period, but they weren’t able to pick up any ground. Beaumont scored his second at 4:07 on the man advantage. Just 1:49 later, Cory Gurski made it 5-1. The contest settled down for the next six minutes, but at 13:17 Jake Rosen closed the scoring with another even-strength tally. The goal signaled the end of the night for Bears sophomore goalie Brendan McMenimen (Merrimack, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club). Freshman Trever Ralph (Middletown, N.J./New Jersey Titans) finished out the contest with four saves in the last 6:43.

McMenimen made 22 saves in the first 53:17. Mike DeLaVergne stopped 27 shots to earn the win. The Bengals were 2-for-3 on the power play and Potsdam went 0-for-3.

The Bears look to bounce back when they face SUNY Fredonia at 7 p.m. tomorrow night.
