Smolcynski And Hayton Lead St. Lawrence Over Colgate

CANTON, N.Y. – Drew Smolcynski scored two goals and Kyle Hayton made 45 saves to lead St. Lawrence to a 4-2 victory over Colgate in ECAC Hockey action Friday at Appleton Arena.

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the game was seven minutes old.
Joe Sullivan opened the scoring just 3:34 into the contest, re-directing a point shot from Ben Masella to grab the early advantage.

Smolcynski doubled the St. Lawrence cushion with 6:52 elapsed in the opening frame, capitalizing on a Colgate turnover deep in the Raiders zone to beat keeper Charlie Finn with a backhander inside the left post.

Colgate battled back to tie the game at 2-2 before the halfway point of the second period.

Mike Panowyk got the Raiders on the board less than four minutes into the middle frame, deflecting a goalmouth pass from Brett Corkey past Hayton.

Rookie Rory McGuire tied the game with 9:35 gone in the second with a slap shot from the left point that beat Hayton over his right shoulder for his first collegiate tally.

Smolcynski’s restored St. Lawrence’s advantage with 90 seconds remaining in the second, tallying the eventual game-winning goal with a power play tally for his second goal of the contest.

Sean McGovern closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal with 49 seconds remaining in the third to determine the final margin.

Hayton made 35 of his 45 saves during the final two periods as Colgate out-shot St. Lawrence, 37-16, over the last 40 minutes to post a 47-25 shot advantage for the game. Finn finished with 22 saves between the pipes for Colgate.

“We had a slow start. They came at us really hard in the first after the initial power play where we had some good looks. You have to give them credit. They were feeding off the emotion in the building.

“But we responded well. We fired a lot of pucks towards the net tonight. I thought we worked hard enough to get something out of this tonight, but that’s the way it’s going for us right now.”
