SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Senior Jess Brown’s third multi-goal game of the season, freshman Diana Buckley’s first career goal and a pair of assists from freshman Micah Hart earned Cornell women’s hockey a 3-1 win over Union and two key ECAC Hockey points at Messa Rink on Friday night.
Brown scored two goals in the first 5:04 of the game to give the Big Red an early lead, netting her first at 3:37 before adding another just 1:27 later.
Brown stole the puck along the boards and put in her own rebound for the first. Hart then set up the play for the second goal, and junior Brianna Veerman fed Brown in the right faceoff circle. Brown put her shot away into the left corner for her career-high 11th goal of the season. The Big Red is now 4-0-2 when Brown scores and 3-0 when she scores multiple goals.
Cornell (9-9-4, 5-6-4 ECAC Hockey) took a 2-0 lead into the first break, but Union (0-21-6, 0-12-3 ECAC Hockey) started the second period on a power play and made it count as Jacyn Reeves cut Cornell’s lead in half just 1:03 into the middle frame.
A trio of freshman teamed up on Cornell’s own man-advantage situation, the Big Red’s only power play of the night. Hart once again set the scoring play in motion, and gave Lenka Serdar a pass. Serdar’s shot rebounded out to Buckley, who beat Dutchwomen goaltender Melissa Black five-hole with 8:22 left in the second period. Hart’s second assist of the night was her team-leading 15th of the season, and Cornell is now 7-0-1 when she tallies a helper and 5-0 when she records more than one.
The Big Red outshot Union, 32-18, and freshman goaltender Marlène Boissonnault made 17 saves to earn her fourth victory of the season.
Cornell heads to Rensselaer for a 4 p.m. matchup on Saturday at Houston Field House.
