MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustang men’s ice hockey team was unable to weather the Knights comeback bid, settling for a 4-4 OT tie in the first game of their SUNYAC series on Friday night.
Morrisville State jumped on Geneseo early, picking up two goals before the mid-way point of the first period. Joe Ftoma (Winnipeg, Manitoba) found the back of the net on a shorthanded goal at the 7:07 mark. The goal was Ftoma’s first of the 2015-2016 season. Layne Martin (Findlay, Ohio) picked up the assist. Two minutes later, Brett Johnson (Bronnxville, N.Y.) put the Mustangs up 2-0. David Landau (Newtown, Conn.) and Nick Russo (Sayville, N.Y.) added assists.
However, the host Knights battled back, scoring two of their own at the end of the first period.
With the score knotted at two goals apiece entering the second period, Morrisville quickly regained the advantage with a Mike Giacometti (Mississauga, Ontario) goal just 36 seconds into the second. CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Vt.) picked up his 14th assist on the season on the play.
The Mustangs continued to add to their lead with 15 minutes left in the second, when Darren Young (Woodstock, Ontario) extended the lead to 4-2 off of a feed from Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, Ontario).
Both teams hit a scoring drought at the end of the second and into the third period. After nearly 25 minutes, Geneseo pulled within 1 with 9:51 remaining. Unfortunately, for Morrisville, Geneseo found a way to even the score with four minutes left in the game.
Overtime was not kind to either team as neither could find the back of the net, bringing the final score to 4-4.
The Mustangs will continue their SUNYAC series against Geneseo tomorrow night. The puck is set to drop at 7 PM in the IcePlex on the campus of Morrisville State College.
