GENEVA, N.Y. – For the second straight day 60 minutes was not enough to settle things between William Smith and Oswego. The Lakers came away with a 2-1 victory in a tightly contested ECAC West game at The Cooler.
Alexa Aramburu buried the game-winning goal at 3:05 of the overtime period to give Oswego (10-8-3, 6-7-3) the victory. Andrea Noss won the faceoff back to Aramburu who carried the puck through the slot. Aramburu flicked a shot from the right faceoff circle over the glove of Maggie Salmon.
William Smith (8-11-2, 3-9-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 7:09 of the first period when sophomore Krista Federow intercepted a clearing pass at the blue line and broke in all alone on the goalie. She tucked a backhand around the left pad of Tori Trovato, the Oswego goalie, for her 10th goal of the season. Federow now has goals in five-straight games. The period ended with the Heorns holding a 1-0 lead.
Oswego tied the game at 4:08 of the second period with a short-handed goal from Noss. Olivia Ellis created a turnover in the offensive zone and fed a pass to Noss who lifted the shot over Maggie Salmon. The Lakers had a couple of other scoring opportunities in the period but could not get another shot past Salmon.
First-year Lindsay Brown had William Smith’s best scoring chance of the second period. She fired a shot from inside the right faceoff circle that Trovato was able to get a glove on, robbing Brown point blank.
The Lakers carried a majority of the play in the third period but Salmon was up to the task turning all 22 shots she faced. Halfway through the period, Federow had another golden scoring opportunity from inside the slot. Trovato was able to get a glove on the puck and control the rebound as a hard Heron fore-check forced her to quickly move the puck.
Salmon was impressive in the William Smith goal. She made 53 saves in 63:05 of action and made a couple of highlight reel saves late in third period to keep the Lakers off the board. Trovato made 25 saves in the Oswego goal and slammed the door shut following Federow’s goal.
Both teams came away empty on the power play. William Smith was 0-for-2 with the extra attacker, while the Lakers were 0-for-1.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 13, when it travels to Elmira for an ECAC West game. The next afternoon, the Soaring Eagles will make the trip up the lake to Geneva.
