MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustangs Men’s Ice Hockey dropped the first part of their SUNYAC series to Cortland State, 5-4 on Friday night.
This game, in addition to being senior night, was a benefit game for cancer awareness and research. The game also honored the life of Normand Chaput, late father of senior captain Marc-Antoine Chaput (Mascouche, Quebec), who lost his battle with cancer this past July. All proceeds for this game were donated to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
Cortland struck first in this conference matchup as Dan Broderick scored on a pass back from Darren McCormick, ten minutes into play. Two minutes later, the Red Dragons put another one on the board as Andrew Gleason scored on a one-timer. Sean Brown and Kyle Herring assisted on the play.
The Mustangs cut the lead in half with less than three minutes to go in the first period. Dario Trupina (Virserum, Sweden) rifled a bullet from the blue line, while Darren Young (Woodstock, Ontario) picked up the assist. Only 21 seconds later, the Mustangs tied up the game off a deflected slapshot from Trupina. Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, Ontario) picked up the goal and Darren Young picked up an assist.
After an interference penalty was called on Ryan Wagner with three minutes to go in the second period, Morrisville’s Tyler Lepore (London, Ontario) would pick up a goal on the ensuing power play. Joseph Santino (Woodbridge, Ontario) and Young would pick up assists on the play.
Morrisville extended their lead to 4-2, just five minutes into the third period when Lepore scored off a terrific feed from Layne Martin (Findlay, Ohio).
Less than a minute later, however, the Red Dragons would pull within one goal when Sean Brown scored on a breakaway. Kyle Herring and Andrew McCann assisted on the play. Cortland State would complete the comeback and force overtime when Sam Pinsler picked up a goal off his own rebounded shot.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs would concede a goal 30 seconds into the overtime period when Darren McCormick scored off an assist by Dan Broderick ending a hard fought battle.
Morrisville will look for revenge when they hit the road and square off against Cortland State on the Red Dragon’s home ice on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
