Plattsburgh Tops Utica In ECAC West Title Game

PLATTSBURGH, NY- Top-ranked Plattsburgh State scored three power play goals as it downed the Utica College women’s hockey team 8-0 in the ECAC West Championship game Sundayafternoon.

The Pioneers finish 19-8-1 on the year, while the nationally ranked No. 1 Cardinals improved to 26-1 on the season and pick up their fourth straight ECAC West Conference Championship. Utica handed Plattsburgh its only loss of the season, a 4-2 defeat on Feb. 13.

Plattsburgh jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first period and the Cardinals kept the pressure on throughout the rest of the game, scoring two goals each in the final two periods. Courtney Moriarty (two goals, one assist) and Erin Brand (three assists) each had three points to lead the Cardinals.

Junior Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) made 42 saves in net, while her counterpart, Camille Leonard stopped all 17 shots she faced. Plattsburgh, which boasts the nation’s top power play, was 3-for-7 with the man advantage, while Utica was held scoreless on two opportunities.

Senior Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) (one goal, one assist), junior Emily Coope (Phoenix, AZ/Colorado Tigers) (two goals), and sophomore Samantha Husak (Jackson, MI/Grass Lake) (three assists) were named to the All-Tournament team after recording multiple points in the semifinal win over Elmira.

Utica had arguably its most successful season in program history as the Pioneers set a new program record for wins in a season (19), conference victories (13), and Utica advanced to the conference final for just the second time ever.
