ROCHESTER, NY — The RIT women’s hockey team (0-3-0) was defeated by Providence College (1-3-0), 7-0 on Friday afternoon in non-conference action from the Gene Polisseni Center.

Shots were 42-24 in favor of the Friars. The Tigers went 0-for-6 on the power play, while Providence was 1-for-5. Madison Myers got the win in net for the Friars, making 24 saves, while Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale) took the loss in her first action of the season for the Tigers, making 35 saves.

“We were excited to have a couple players back today,” said Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach Scott McDonald. “But that wasn’t enough. We were watching the puck too much.”

Providence scored twice in the first period, once in the second, and exploded for four goals in the third. Cassidy McPherson gave the Friars a 1-0 lead on her first of two goals at 2:39, with assists from Whitney Dove and Blair Parent. Madison Sanson tallied at 16:31 of the first period to give Providence a 2-0 lead.

RIT fired 11 shots on net in the opening period, including a great chance from Christa Vuglar (Crystal Lake, IL/Chicago Mission) midway through the frame.

McPherson scored the lone goal in the second period at 17:31, recording an unassisted tally to make it 3-0 Providence. RIT had a 5-on-3 power play in the second, generating a good chance when Reagna Rust broke in from the blue line. She weaved in and out of traffic, snapping off a wrist-shot that Myers sent away. The rebound came out to Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard), but her shot went just wide of the net.

Providence tacked on four more goals in the third period. Cassidy Carels started the scoring with her goal at 1:41 of the third. Arianna Reid made it 5-0 Providence on her goal at 5:38. Brooke Boquist and Meaghan Rickard also tallied goals in the third to make it a 7-0 final.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 versus Providence at 2:05 p.m. from the Gene Polisseni Center.
