Brooke Webster had two assists to reach 100 points in her career, and Hannah Miller scored two goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women’s hockey team in a 3-3 tie with fourth-ranked Clarkson University in a non-league game on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena in Potsdam.
The Saints had a 3-2 lead late in the game, but Clarkson’s Corie Jacobson picked up a loose puck on the left side and blasted a shot past St. Lawrence goaltender Grace Harrison with 27.2 seconds to play to send the game into overtime. St. Lawrence outshot Clarkson 3-0 in the overtime period, but was unable to convert and walked away with their first tie of the season, moving to 3-0-1 on the year. Clarkson moved to 2-1-1.
“Today’s game was another great effort by our team,” said Saints’ head coach Chris Wells ’92. “We probably played one of our best games of the year. (Clarkson goaltender Shea) Tiley was excellent in net and Clarkson capitalized on some nice chances to make it a tie game. We had plenty of great opportunities to win it, but Clarkson was able to keep us off the board.”
Josiane Pozzebon gave the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game with a shot from just outside the Saints’ crease. Cassidy Vinkle and Lauren Lefler picked up assists on the play.
Less than five minutes later, Miller tied the game with the Saints holding a 5-on-3 advantage, sniping a shot from the faceoff circle off a point-to-point pass from Kirsten Padalis. Webster also picked up an assist on the play for her 99th career point.
Miller’s second goal of the game gave the Saints their first lead halfway into the second period. Justine Reyes started the play with a shot from the left side. Kennedy Marchment picked up the rebound and sent a pass to the slot. Miller’s shot deflected off Tiley and fluttered over the sprawling netminder and into the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Rhyen McGill tied the game for Clarkson late in the second period, converting a pass from Vinkle deep in the slot on a 5-on-3 power play. The goal was the first the St. Lawrence penalty kill unit has allowed this season.
Nadine Edney gave the Saints a 3-2 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the third period. Webster was sprung on a 2-on-1 by Reyes, who chipped the puck up the right side. Webster drove through the neutral zone into the Clarkson zone and fired a shot off Tiley’s right leg pad, but the rebound went right to Edney streaking up the left side, and the sophomore from Mississauga, Ontario, put the rebound home for her second goal of the season. The assist was the 100th point for Webster, who now has 42 goals and 58 assists in 113 career games.
St. Lawrence outshot the Golden Knights 32-22. Harrison made 19 saves for the Saints, while Tiley stopped 29 shots for Clarkson.
The tie comes on the heels of a 2-1 win over Clarkson at Appleton Arena last night.
“These games are always great to play in and both teams played their hearts out,” said Wells. “We will enjoy a little break and be ready to go in two weeks versus Vermont.”
