PROVIDENCE, RI – Haley Shugart and Arianna Kosakowski both netted goals as the Union College women’s hockey team lost to Providence College 4-2 on the road.
After a scoreless first period, the Friars opened up the scoring 1:40 into the second period when Madison Sansone found the back of the net off of a rebound. The Dutchwomen answered just ten minutes later when Brandy Streeter sent one on net. It was deflected up in the air by Jordi Naidrich and finally batted into the goal by Haley Shugart.
The game was knotted at one all heading into the third period. At the 3:47 mark, Providence broke the deadlock as Christina Putingna scored to putting the Friars up 2-1.
Again, Union would answer back as Kosakowski fired a shit from the left point and beat the keeper on the high glove side. The goal scored at the 14:59 mark of the third period was Kosakowski’s first career goal in a Union sweater.
Just a minute and a half later, Providence took the lead back as the Friars’ Cassidy Carels converted on a powerplay opportunity which proved to be the eventual game winner.
The Friars added a empty netter to make it 4-2 with 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Union is back on the ice on October 28th when it opens up ECAC play against Colgate. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
