NEW HAVEN, CT — The RIT women’s hockey team (1-6-0) fell 4-1 in the first of two games on the road against Yale (1-0-0) on Friday evening at historic Ingalls Rink.
Freshman goaltender Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made a career-high 46 saves for the Tigers in her fifth collegiate start, while senior Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) found the scoresheet with her first goal of the season. Sophomore Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) had the helper on Clayton’s goal, her second point of the year.
The scoring began in the opening period for the Bulldogs. Yale tallied the opening goal 8:30 into the game, as Jodan Chancellor potted her first goal of the season. With 5:49 left in the first, Kara Drexler found the back of the net, making it 2-0 Bulldogs. The shots were 24-2 in favor of Yale in the opening period. However, the Tigers killed off all three penalties in the opening stanza.
After a scoreless second period, Yale was able in increase its lead in the third, as Taylor Marchin’s power-play goal made it a 3-0 game. The Tigers would come back with a goal of their own under two minutes later, as Clayton found the back of the net, cutting the deficit to two.
The Tigers took their chances and pulled Lanteigne for an extra attacker with 2:29 to go in regulation. Yale took advantage, as Krista Yip-Chuck scored an empty-net goal to finish the scoring.
“We came out flat in the first period,” said Bruce B. Bate Women’s Hockey Coach Scott McDonald. “But as the game went on I thought we played better. We just have to be sharper with the puck tomorrow and make better decisions without the puck.”
Yale was 1-for-5 on the power-play compared to 0-for-3 for RIT. The Buldogs out-shot the Tigers 50-18 on the night.
The Tigers and Bulldogs will face off one more time on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Ingalls Rink. Live stats and video will be available for Saturday’s game.
