Canton Comes From Behind to Defeat Cortland

CANTON, N.Y. – Tyler Bullard scored with five seconds remaining in regulation to complete a 3-2 come-from-behind victory for the SUNY Canton men’s hockey team over Cortland in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Freshman Dougie Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden/New Jersey Rockets) led the Red Dragons with one goal and one assist. Junior Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored a goal, and junior Paul Fregeau (Los Angeles, CA/Des Moines Buccaneers), sophomore Mike Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) and freshman Stefano Alonzi (Maple, ON/Burlington Cougars) each chipped in with an assist. Junior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) made 21 saves.

Vili-Jesper Koivula paced the Kangaroos with two goals and an assist, while Nick Lepone recorded an assist. Goalie Michael Cerasuolo registered 16 saves.

Elgstam gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead just 1:09 into the game, and McCormick’s power-play goal at 3:49 of the second period made it a 2-0 game.

Koivula cut the Canton deficit in half at 14:07 of the second, then he evened the score at 2-2 with a power-play goal at 12:17 of the third period. Bullard netted the game winner at 19:55 of the third period 24 seconds after Canton killed of a Cortland power play.

The same two teams meet Saturday at Canton at 7 p.m.
